Slow Cooker Apple Butter Recipe

Delicious and fragrant apple butter.

Custom Search

Our Slow Cooker Apple Butter Recipe is one that I personally love...the honey gives it a smooth, sweet, but not too sweet taste and the seasonings are just perfect. There are many recipes for apple butter that begin directly with the apples, but this one begins with unsweetened applesauce...and homemade is just so much better. We have a great recipe in our
Homemade Applesauce Recipe. Just add a couple of extra apples, and you will have the 7 cups necessary for this recipe.

Neither recipe is difficult and the resulting tastes are phenomenal compared to the store-bought kind. I know...you don't have time to do what you're doing now, never mind adding from-scratch recipes to your repertoire. Most of the time is spent in the slow cooker or crockpot for this recipe for apple butter.

Okay, if you're really pressed for time and want to know how to make apple butter, you could possibly use an unsweetened, high-quality, store-bought applesauce for our crockpot apple butter recipe. I hope I've already made a good "case" for trying both homemade apple recipes: applesauce and apple butter. Give them a try...it's not a daunting task. Figure a time schedule for yourself and plan to do other things during the slow cooking part.

Ingredients

7 cups delicious, unsweetened applesauce

2 cups of apple cider or apple juice

1-1/2 cups honey

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

my own labels - custom labels and tags

Why not freeze your applesauce and/or apple butter in freezer bags until you need homemade gifts. How about thawing some of your sauce and/or butter to pack into cute jars with your own personal labels.
There you have it...instant gifts.

Method

  • Mix all the above ingredients in your slow cooker or crockpot. Notice the light color as illustrated below.

  • Light colored beginning of apple butter.

  • Cover and set the pot on low for three hours.

  • At this point, uncover the pot, mix the apple butter mixture and continue to cook on low, stirring occasionally.

  • As time goes on, the water will begin to evaporate and the apple butter will become a deep, rich color. This is illustrated in the photo below...what a difference a little time makes.

Slow Cooker Apple Butter as color gets deeper and richer.

  • I kept the slow cooker on low, continuing to stir every now and then. After about 7 or so hours, I was happy with the finished product...it was thick, nicely-brown and smelling like "heaven in a slow cooker." Much depends on your particular crockpot and your own taste. The 7 hours is only given as a "target time" which you can adjust as you like.
