Oatmeal Apple Crisp

Warm and cozy oatmeal apple crisp...great on a cool, crisp day or anytime.

Our Oatmeal Apple Crisp is particularly satisfying, and I believe that this is due to the addition of oatmeal in the apple crisp topping.

I think people and restaurants alike love an apple crisp dessert recipe because it has certainly been labeled "comfort food." And, what could be identified as true comfort food more than an apple crisp recipe with oatmeal? Served warm with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, it can be just plain soothing.

With the colder weather just around the corner, I hope you'll make and enjoy our Oatmeal Apple Crisp to warm both your body and your heart. I guess we may never know all the wondrous benefits of the oatmeal/apple crisp combination.

Ingredients

1 cup packed brown sugar

3/4 cup unsifted flour

1/4 cup oats (I used traditional)

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 tsp. cloves

1/2 cup butter, cut up into small pieces

6 medium apples
(I used Granny Smiths but any cooking apple would do just fine.)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Method

  • Heat oven to 350°F.

  • Lightly spray a 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray.

  • Combine the first five ingredients together in a bowl.

  • Cut the butter into the dry ingredients.

(I found the easiest way to do this was with two sharp knives slicing in opposite directions...the pastry blender was not particularly helpful in this application.)

  • Peel and slice apples, and sprinkle with lemon juice. Mix together, and put in prepared pie pan.

  • Sprinkle sugar mixture on top of apples, and press down evenly. This will be quite a hefty crust because we've added no sweetness at all to the apples.

  • Bake for 50-55 minutes or until the apples are soft enough, topping is bubbling around the edge of the pie dish, and the top is nicely browned.

We know you'll love this recipe. How about inviting the girls for lunch, buying some great bread or rolls, a nice bottle of wine and serving our Apple & Raisin Waldorf Salad as your main dish. It will turn a hum-drum Saturday into a gab session for sure.
