Method
Preheat oven to 350°F and take out a 9x9x2 inch baking pan. Do not spray or grease pan.
In a medium-sized bowl, mix together 1 cup of flour and 1/3 cup of sugar.
To this mixture cut in 1/2 cup butter, using either a pastry blender or two sharp knives pulled together in opposite directions thereby cutting up and cutting in the butter. The result should be a crumbly texture.
In your ungreased pan, press the crumbly crust mixture firmly onto the bottom.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
While the crust is baking, mix the flour and brown sugar for the crumb topping together. Using the same method as the one mentioned for the crust above, cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly. Set this aside for now.
In a medium bowl, mix the sugar, flour and cinnamon together.
Toss the sliced apples together with the seasonings until the apples are well coated.
The baked crust should be out of the oven by this time, so you can spoon this apple mixture onto crust.
Sprinkle with the crumb topping.
Place in your preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the topping is light brown and the apples test tender.
Cool for at least 1/2 hour before serving, but these squares can be served warm or cool. We added a scoop of ice cream on top, and what a great combination.
