Ingredients for the Best Apple Pie Recipe 1/3 cup softened butter about 1 cup granulated sugar - used in the following order in the following amounts: 1. 3 tablespoons in crust
2. 1/3 cup sugar in syrup to sweeten apples
3. 1/2 cup sugar used 1 tablespoon at a time in the meringue
2 egg yolks (Save 1 egg white in a small bowl and slightly beat it, and the other in a larger bowl suitable for beating into the meringue later.)
3/4 cup UNsifted flour 1/3 cup chopped almonds (I had sliced almonds on hand, so I just chopped them up a little more.) grated peel (not white rind) and juice of 1/2 lemon 4 to 6 medium apples, peeled, cored and halved 1/3 cup seedless raspberry preserves 4 egg whites added to the other 1 in the large bowl dash of salt
Method for the Best Apple Pie Recipe - Preheat your oven to 350°F and take out a 9-inch pie pan.
- Cream the softened butter with 3 tablespoons sugar; add the sugar gradually, and beat until light and fluffy.
- Add the two egg yokes to the sugar and butter mixture.
- Add flour, almonds and grated lemon peel, mixing just until the flour is evenly distributed.

- Press crust ingredients on bottom and sides of your 9-inch pie pan and brush with 1 slightly-beaten egg white.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until crust is slightly browned.
- Combine apples, 1/3 cup sugar, and lemon juice in a large skillet; cover and cook over medium heat until tender.*
*If you take the cover off and all the apples are not in perfect halves or look like they're breaking apart, please do not panic. It's fine.

- Spread jam evenly onto the bottom and sides of the crust, and arrange drained apples on top.
Perfect Meringue Instructions
- Beat the 4 remaining egg whites plus the one already in the bowl with salt until stiff, but not dry.
- Continue beating and adding, 1 tablespoon at a time, the 1/3 cup of sugar remaining.
VERY IMPORTANT: All of the sugar granules must get completely dissolved. While beating and adding the 1 tablespoon of sugar at a time, stop a few times and feel the meringue between your thumb and index finger. When you thoroughly beat in the the last sugar addition, all the gritty sugar particles will have dissolved and you will have the "perfect meringue."

- This picture gives you an idea of how nice and high and fluffy your meringue will come out.
- Now gently pile your meringue lightly on top of your pie, spreading it to make sure it covers your soft apple filling.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 18 minutes or until the meringue is just lightly browned.
