Apple Crisp Pudding

Apple Crisp Pudding with brown sugar syrup bubbling up through topping.

This Apple Crisp Pudding recipe was handed down to my friend Audrey who, in turn, submitted it to me for our website visitors. The name of the recipe leaves us both scratching our heads because it's definitely more like an apple crisp dessert recipe than a pudding. However, someone must have had a good reason for calling it a pudding, so I thought it better to leave it that way.

There is no sweetening in the apples themselves, so brown sugar is doing that job all by itself. The little bit of water added with the spices to the apples, allows that mixture to bubble up and moisten the topping. If you like apple crisp, you'll like this apple pudding dessert as well.

It's definitely comfort food at its finest, and served warm with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream makes it absolutely lip-smacking.

Ingredients

4 cups apple slices (about 6 to 8 apples, sliced 1/4 inch thick)

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F

  • Spray about a 1-1/2 quart casserole dish

  • Place the apple slices into the baking dish.

  • Combine the cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle on the apples.

  • Add the 1/2 cup water.

  • In a small to medium-sized bowl, whisk the sugar and flour together until blended. Cut in the butter until the mix is crumbly. Sprinkleover the apple mixture in the casserole dish.

  • Bake uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes, depending on how soft you likeyour apples to be. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
