Apple-Cranberry Crisp

Hot apple-cranberry crisp with whipped cream

Our Apple-Cranberry Crisp is a sweet yet tangy apple crisp dessert recipe. It is a perfect marriage of our two main ingredients. For this apple crisp recipe, you can afford to use one of the sweeter apples to offset the tangy flavor of the cranberries. I happened to use gala apples when I made this today. If you find you only have a tart apple on hand, just adjust the amount of sugar you put in.

As we speak, I have a lovely pan of homemade apple crisp in the oven. I'll be sure to get a photograph of it for you, so you'll be able to see this colorful dish soon after it comes from the oven.

Ingredients

5 cups of pared, sliced apples

1-1/2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries

1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of butter

Method

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.

  • Lightly grease or spray a 9-inch square baking pan

  • Layer the pared apples and cranberries in pan, sprinkling sugar on each layer.

  • For the topping, whisk together the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.

  • Cut in 1/4 cup of the butter until it's crumbly.

  • Sprinkle topping evenly over fruit, and use the 2 tablespoons of butter to dot on top before baking.

  • Bake for 45 minutes or until the apples are tender when pokedwith a sharp knife.

I know you'll enjoy this apple cranberry crisp recipe, and I thought perhaps you might like to check out our Mouthwatering Baked Ham recipe, too. Many times ham is forgotten about unless there's a holiday to celebrate, but it can be a great Sunday dinner any time, with leftovers for our Cabbage and Ham Casserole.
