Apple Baked Beans

Apple Baked Beans bake happily away with the wonderful bacon flavor baked right in, too

Our Apple Baked Beans Recipe is the one to reach for if you're in the mood for some "kicked up" Boston Baked Beans. It takes two cans of your favorite canned baked beans to new heights because of the addition of a Granny Smith apple and brown sugar. How can you lose with that combination?

This may not be the most complicated of the baked bean recipes, but it stands alone when it comes to delivering both taste and convenience. With the summer months coming along soon, this is a perfectly easy baked bean casserole to toss together, bake and take along to a potluck or a picnic. The recipe canbe saved for the colder months as well...when you need a delicious and quick item for a buffet table.

I know our bean recipe has been and will be at many a Finn gathering...winter or summer...and I hope many of yours, too.

Apple Baked Beans

Ingredients

1 cup diced onion

2 cans (15 oz. size) Boston style baked beans, undrained

1 cup Granny Smith apple, peeled and diced (About 1 medium-size apple)

1 tablespoon prepared mustard (I used the yellow one.)

1/4 cup packed brown sugar or to taste (1/4 cup makes a nice, sweet bean dish.)

1 teaspoon salt

4 strips bacon

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and spray a 2-quart baking dish with cooking spray.

  • In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except the bacon.

  • Transfer the ingredients to your prepared baking dish.

  • Lay your raw bacon strips over the top of the bean mixture.

  • Cover the dish and bake about 45 minutes in the preheated oven, until the casserole is bubbly.

  • Uncover and bake for an additional five minutes. Bacon will not be crispy, but the flavor is definitely heightened by the addition of bacon on top of the beans.

Since you're making our delicious Apple Baked Beans, maybe you'd like our Crunchy Apple Slaw Recipe to go with them. It's a nice twosome.
