French Toast Bake Recipe

Make this delicious French toast casserole one night and bake the next day.

Our French Toast Bake Recipe is just so handy...put it together and you can refrigerate it for as few as four hours or make it over night French toast and refrigerate it until morning. This casserole will be waiting for you in the morning, when you can bake it up fresh and treat your family to something different for breakfast.

Any special day would be a perfect day to utilize the convenience of this oven-baked French toast. No standing over a skillet or griddle making two to four pieces of French toast and trying to keep them warm.

I love the fact that Friday night I can put together this French Toast Bake and refrigerate it. When I get up on Saturday, I pop it in the oven, have my first cup of coffee, and read the morning paper or run to check my e-mail.

It's not long before you can smell that wonderful aroma from the kitchen, and your tastebuds are crying out for our French Toast Bake. I can tell you that it never disappoints...I so enjoy something substantial that's sweet, too.

I guess I may as well admit to having a "sweet tooth," as if I had to. This recipe is great...do give it a try.

Ingredients

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

3 teaspoons ground cinnamon - divided

3 tart apples, such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and thinly-sliced

1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins

1 loaf French or Italian Bread, cut into 1-inch slices

6 eggs

1-1/2 cups milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Method

  • Spray a 13x9x2 pan with cooking spray.

  • Mix brown sugar, melted butter, and 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon together in a large bowl.

  • Add apples and cranberries, stirring to coat these fruits well. Spread this mixture evenly in the bottom of your baking pan.

  • Arrange slices of bread on top...squeezing them together just a little to make a nice, compact casserole.

  • In a medium-sized bowl, mix eggs, milk, vanilla extract and the remaining 2 teaspoons cinnamon together until well blended.

  • Pour this mixture over the bread, soaking it completely.

  • Cover with foil and refrigerate at least 4 hours or up to 24 hours.

  • Preheat oven to 375°F and bake, covered, 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 5 minutes longer. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

  • For eye appeal when serving, take each piece you slice and invert it onto your serving dish. This will, as illustrated above, show the delicious apples, sauce, and dried cranberries.

I know you'll enjoy this French Toast Bake Recipe, and why not check out our Apple Banana Bread for a breakfast treat some other day.
